Class on 1/30

Class on 1/30

Today in Mr. Schick’s class we started off, by in the very beginning of class we have a lock down drill which lasted a pretty long time. We probably had about thirty minutes of class left when the lock down was over. Then when we came back into the classroom, Phil and Jevan reviewed what we had already learned with the class. It was pretty funny actually. When Mr. Schick started teaching again we learned about Hammurabi’s code. The first one was “an eye for an eye” which is nothing like today’s life.  The second law of Hammurabi is if a man marry a woman and she bear him no sons; if then this woman die, if the "purchase price" which he had paid into the house of his father-in-law is repaid to him, her husband shall have no claim upon the dowry of this woman; it belongs to her father's house which doesn't have much relevance for today. The third is that is a son strikes his father then his hand must be cut off immediately, which today would be abuse and the person would go to jail.

Class on 1/28

Class on 1/28

Today in Mr. Schick’s Western Civilization class, we started the actual curriculum of the last. We started to take notes in our notebooks.  We learned all about the earliest civilizations, especially Mesopotamia and the Sumerians.  We learned what happened during the Prehistoric Era and how we came to be.  We also talked a lot about the first form of writing called Cuneform and how they took stone tools and turned it into writing that took many years to decipher. We used later forms of writing to try and figure out what the little symbols meant.  Doing this helps us figure out more of the history before we know and maybe how we came to be.  We also learned what happens with the hierarchy system, and how women were thought to be the lowest of all. Hunters were at the top, the craftsmen, and then women.

Class on 1/24/14

Class on 1/24/14

In class today, we talked about the movie we watched the day before, Girl Rising.  The school gave a lesson plan to use, but Mr. Schick decided to go and do it on his own. We discussed why this might be happening and that America still is not perfect with women’s jobs and pay that they receive.  We talked about the education and what it would be like if we weren't educated and what would happen.  We also brought up the topic of voting and that women weren't allowed to vote until pretty recently.  We talked about each one of the girl’s story’s and the location and what the location could have had to do with education. Each one of the stories were unique in their own way and really made you think about what live would be like without education and what would happen if here in America, girls weren't normally educated.

Class on 1/23/14

Class on 1/23/14

Today in Mr. Schick’s class, we only had sixteen minutes so we couldn't really do much. Mr. Schick introduced the class and then we created our blogger account. It was a two hour late and a two hour early dismissal bell today so each mod was only eight minutes long so there wasn't much we could do in that short time. We got to sit wherever we wanted and some of us got to meet a new teacher for the first time. Mr. Schick went over the basic rules for the class and what we can and cannot do during this second semester. I look forward to this class and the time I get to spend with my friends, while learning at the same time.  Mr. Schick seems like a fun teacher who isn't too tough but a class that we can actually enjoy without having to struggle with the work and a hard teacher.
